Information For Guests With Disabilities

It should be noted that the Caribee Colony Cottages and the Indian River Lagoon Waterfront Home are older free standing structures built in 1942 and 1947 respectively. No alterations to any of the buildings have occurred. Generally, the property maintains a historic ambience of an "Old Florida" fishing destination. While we welcome guests with disabilities, due to its age, our property has extremely limited accessibility features which may present problems for guests who use wheelchairs, as discussed below.

Our properties are located within the incorporated Town of St. Lucie Village that was first settled in 1843. The Village is a small town with a population of approximately 600. Our property is located in the oldest part of the Village and within its National Register Historic District. The oldest home in the Village was built in 1875.

According to historic records, the Waterfront Cottages, which remain in their original construction, were barracks for the Naval Officers stationed at the Naval Base in Fort Pierce, Florida during World War II. There are seven (7) buildings consisting of two (2) units each and a Main House for a total of fifteen (15) Cottages. The Cottages have the same floor plan and basic exterior and interior dimensions and are not ADA compliant. The Caribee Cottages are believed to be constructed of Dade County pine. The Indian River Lagoon Waterfront Home was built in 194 7 and remains in its original configuration and layout. The home is not ADA compliant. Except for interior decor, flooring, and paint, both the Waterfront Home and Cottages remain unaltered, some of which still contain kitchen and bathroom fixtures from the 1940' s era.

Due to the age of our property and the historical configuration of these vacation units, after careful assessment and consultation with building contractors and other experts, it has been determined that any changes which might incorporate or enhance the accessible features of our property are not readily achievable. Doorways, bathrooms, and room configurations may be problematic due to size limitations and other prohibitive features, particularly the bathrooms, especially if you are unable to ambulate from your wheelchair. Please note there are no units specifically designated for handicap access. Each of the units have barriers to access, including a lack of maneuvering clearance within the bathrooms. Guests with wheelchairs, unless they can ambulate, will not be able to easily use the facilities.

There is no check-in area or on-site office. Check-in is handled strictly on line. There are no designated handicapped units on the property that are available for reservation or otherwise. There is on-site unpaved parking that is detached from the Cottage area which requires travel over gravel areas or grass to reach the sidewalks which provide connectivity to the Cottages. There is a boat dock with wooden ramp. Access to the boat dock requires travel across a publicly owned narrow roadway with a grass right-of-way. We do allow pets for additional fees. Service animals are welcomed w ithout any additional fee.

Please feel free to call us if you have any questions or need additional information concerning our properties.
